Doors

Accepting and fulfilling The Finicky Cynic’s daily challenges last month really ignited my writing creativity, expanding it more than I ever imagined it would go when I launched this blog late last year.  What originally started out as a blog all about fashion and my life as a crossdresser has expanded to include personal reflections, thoughts on everyday life, and experimenting with different writing styles (e.g. this post or this post).  So you can cay I have a pretty big Jones for writing inspiration right now.

Which leads me to something brand new:  F.C. mentioned she was inspired to do June Jour through the challenges set forth by WordPress’ Daily Post blog.  Only realizing today that I’m following Daily Post on WP as well (how embarrassing of me), I checked out some of the prompts they’ve been featuring lately, including their prompt for today.  It’s inspired me to start a little something I’m calling… [big drumroll]

“Allison’s Not-Quite-Daily Daily Writing Challenge”

I use that title since the odds are likely I won’t get the opportunity to write a response to each and every Daily Post prompt, for various reasons.  And if I do create a response, I may not get to finish it before the day is out and WordPress sends out their next prompt.  But, at least I’m taking the initiative to do something new to quench my writing thirst.

Today, DP posted a photo prompt about doors.  That’s right, doors.  Take a photo of a door or doors you find interesting and write a post about it.  Naturally, I thought about the front door to my apartment building:

DSCN3579Kind of foreboding, isn’t it?  Something about a big door of a sterile color with no windows on it (and, no, the filtered glass peek-throughs surrounding it doesn’t count) that doesn’t seem too inviting.  This door seems like a latch to a safety-sealed container.  At least each unit has big windows in their living rooms.

Then there’s the back door to my apartment, the one I exit from to start almost every work day and the one I enter through after every work day is done.

DSCN3578Well, at least it has a glass storm door, and it does have plant life surrounding it every summer.  But the door itself is just as white and sterile as the door in the front of my building.

Whichever door I take, it serves as the gateway to the world, allowing me to go wherever I need or want to go, whenever I wish.  They are also there to close me off from the outside when I want to enjoy the privacy of home… or can stifle myself from the rest of the world (a scary thought).

But there’s another door inside my apartment that I want to show you:

DSCN3576This is an accordion door that walls off one of the closets in my apartment.  Sort of tacky, isn’t it?  Heck, it kind of makes the outside doors I posted above works of art by comparison.  But this is the very closet where my feminine attire is kept — the stuff that visually makes me, well, me.  To be honest, I look forward to opening this door more than the outside doors to my apartment.  Opening this door gets me started on the way to opening the metaphorical doors that keep Allison inside.  While I may be more comfortable dressed up as a woman in private, every time I do dress up opens another door, cracks open another window, and knocks down another wall in my effort to express my feminine side.  Gee, when I think of it, this isn’t such an ugly door after all.

So, what door or doors do you have in your life, metaphorical or otherwise?  Feel free to comment below or add your own blog post describing it.  Ping back to this post if you wish, or at least ping back to the original Daily Post prompt.

  1. I’m glad to see that the creative juices have kicked in, Allison! I’m also flattered that I’ve at least helped you get inspired with writing new things. 🙂

As for the doors, I used to have an accordion door like that in the photo, but have since upgraded to a sliding, clear glass door between the living room and family room. Amazing how changing doors reflect how we, as people, change as well. Definitely metaphorical, but why not? 😉
